Feeding Checklist for Reef Keeping

Interactive Feeding checklist for Reef Keeping. Track your progress with priority-based items.

A consistent feeding routine is one of the biggest factors in long-term reef tank success. This checklist helps reef keepers feed fish, corals, and invertebrates in a way that supports growth and color while limiting nutrient spikes, algae outbreaks, and water quality instability.

Pro Tips

  • *Pre-portion frozen food into daily cups or a silicone tray so you do not accidentally double-feed when multiple family members help with the tank.
  • *Turn off return pumps only if necessary for coral target feeding, and keep circulation pumps on a low mode so food stays available without settling into dead spots.
  • *Use a red flashlight 1-2 hours after lights out to check whether LPS corals and nocturnal invertebrates show stronger feeding response at night.
  • *If you keep anthias or other frequent feeders, pair an auto-feeder with small pellet feedings during the day and reserve frozen foods for one manual feeding to reduce labor and improve consistency.
  • *When testing a new coral food, start at half the manufacturer recommendation for two weeks and compare polyp extension, skimmate production, nitrate, and phosphate before increasing the dose.
