Light Scheduling Checklist for Saltwater Fish

Interactive Light Scheduling checklist for Saltwater Fish. Track your progress with priority-based items.

A well-planned light schedule does more than make a marine tank look good - it reduces fish stress, supports natural behavior, and keeps algae pressure manageable in FOWLR, fish-only, and breeding systems. Use this checklist to build a practical LED or T5 program with realistic photoperiods, controlled intensity, and tank-specific adjustments for saltwater fish setups.

Pro Tips

  • *If a new fish refuses food in the display, cut peak intensity by about 30% for 48 hours and offer food after the sunrise ramp is complete. This often helps shy angels, butterflies, and wrasses settle faster.
  • *For FOWLR tanks with heavy feeding, start with a total photoperiod of 9 hours and only extend it if algae remains controlled. Many fish keepers run too much light simply for viewing and pay for it with daily glass cleaning.
  • *Use your phone camera under the daytime white-light window to compare coloration, fin condition, and spots from week to week. This is much harder to do accurately under deep blue evening settings.
  • *When introducing aggressive tangs or damsels, make major aquascape changes and dim the lighting slightly on the same day. The lower visibility can reduce immediate territorial targeting.
  • *If you run T5 and LED together, stagger them so LEDs handle sunrise and sunset while T5s only run during the 4-6 hour midday peak. This gives a natural rhythm and avoids unnecessary heat and bulb wear.
