Pest Control Checklist for Beginner Reefers

Interactive Pest Control checklist for Beginner Reefers. Track your progress with priority-based items.

Reef pests can turn a beginner tank from exciting to frustrating fast, especially when they hitchhike in on corals, frag plugs, and live rock. This checklist helps new reefers spot common invaders early, use safe treatment steps, and build habits that reduce livestock losses before a small problem becomes a tank-wide outbreak.

Pro Tips

  • *Keep a small roll of rigid airline tubing and a length of flexible airline on hand so you can siphon flatworms or detritus from one exact spot without disturbing the whole aquascape.
  • *Place new frags in quarantine on a white egg crate or light-colored rack, because pests, eggs, and bite marks are much easier to see against a bright background than on dark rock.
  • *If you suspect montipora-eating nudibranchs, inspect the underside of plating Montipora first, since beginners often only look at the top surface and miss the main infestation area.
  • *When using kalk paste or an Aiptasia treatment, turn off return and wavemakers for 5 to 10 minutes so the product stays on the pest instead of blowing onto nearby coral tissue.
  • *Before every dip session, prepare two separate rinse containers of clean saltwater so pests removed in the dip are not carried right back onto the coral during handling.
